Daily News provides a comprehensive coverage of New York City and the world beyond. Its award-winning writers and columnists report on politics, local events and the latest celebrity gossip. In addition, the newspaper includes a section dedicated to the Yankees, Mets and Giants.
In the 1920s, like many popular newspapers, the Daily News found abundant subject matter including political wrongdoing (such as the Teapot Dome scandal) and social intrigue (like the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to the latter’s abdication). The paper was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service and built up a staff of photographers.
Founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson in New York City as the Illustrated Daily News, the newspaper became one of the first tabloids in the United States and reached its peak circulation in 1947 at 2.4 million copies per day. By the end of the 20th century, the Daily News was still among the largest papers in the nation.
Today the News is published every day except Sunday by New York News, Inc., which is owned by Mortimer Zuckerman, and is the largest newspaper publisher in New York City. The News has a diverse workforce of more than 2,500 employees, including some of the most experienced journalists in the industry. The newspaper’s website receives more than 30 million unique visitors per month.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive contains digitized versions of issues of the newspaper from its founding in 1878 through 1996. The archive is made possible by an anonymous gift to Yale from a Daily News alumnus. It is a part of the Yale Library’s World Wide Web collections and is free to access.
Each article in the archive contains comprehension and critical thinking questions that help students learn about the topics they read about. Additionally, there are “Background” and “Resources” sections that provide more information about the story. In addition, the Yale Daily News also offers a Student Edition that includes all of these features and more. To access the Student Edition, click on the Student icon at the top of any Daily News page. The Yale Daily News is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. Many of its student editors, writers and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life.
