ENTERTAINMENT is a broad category that includes everything from a private amusement to a global entertainment. As our world becomes more interconnected, the potential for entertainment has expanded exponentially. The word comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, derived from the Indo-European root ten, meaning “stretch.” It is often thought of as a form of amusement, but it may also have serious purposes—such as a ceremony, religious festival, or satire. Regardless, many familiar forms of entertainment have demonstrated the ability to cross over a wide variety of media and have become part of our shared cultural heritage.
