Something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement: A ball was an elaborate entertainment.

According to Bates and Ferri (2010), entertainment can be defined as an activity that is understood objectively, involves communication between text and audience from external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires an audience, and occurs in a passive form. However, what appears to be entertainment for one person or group may be considered work or even an act of cruelty by another. The term derives from the Latin intertenere, meaning “to hold inside.” The Indo-European root ten is similar to the Latin prefix inter-, which means “between,” and –ten, meaning “stretch.” See also amusement, enjoyment.
