The Daily News

The Daily News is an American newspaper published in New York City, and the first tabloid to be printed in the United States. Founded in 1919, the paper is known for its zesty headlines, gossip and intense city news coverage. It has won several Pulitzer Prizes during its history, including this year’s for a report on the use of eviction laws to force residents from their homes.

The paper was also a pioneer in using photography, both as a way to illustrate its stories and to create its cover images. In addition to covering politics and society, the paper has long been a source for sports news. During its heyday in the 1940s, the Daily News was one of the most widely read newspapers in the country, with its peak circulation at 2.4 million copies a day. In 1947 the News moved into a building designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood, an official city and national landmark, which was later used as the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films. It remained at the 42nd Street location until 1995, when it moved to 450 West 33rd Street (now called 5 Manhattan West) in New York City. The building is still named the Daily News Building and its large globe remains in its lobby.

Today, the paper continues to focus on local New York events, but also publishes national and international news. In addition to its print edition, it has an online presence and produces multiple television shows. Its website includes a blog and offers a variety of mobile applications. The Daily News is an affiliate of the New York Times and is owned by Tronc, the Tribune Company’s successor.

The first citation of the phrase “The Daily News” occurred in an editorial on February 18, 1924, which described how track writers had coined the term to describe New York’s burgeoning racing scene. The term became popular with the public and was eventually adopted by the newspaper as a nickname for its city edition. The name was shortened to the Daily News in 1929. Today, the newspaper is a leading voice in the New York area. Its website features a wide variety of multimedia content and is a major source for local news.
